Ciara's Childhood Cancer Story - Defeating Synovial Sarcoma at 9 years old
Description
On August 7th, 2018 9 year old Ciara Husing (at the time 8) was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Synovial Sarcoma. Less than 800 people are diagnosed with this soft tissue malignancy per year. Very little research has been completed for this particular cancer which wrecks havoc on children and adults body's and alot of the time ending up with amputation and metastasis. It is a horrible excruciatingly painful cancer generally located in connective tissues but sometimes found in other locations of the body. Ciara has been a warrior throughout her scary childhood cancer journey. Her mom has literally dragged her from Texas to Ohio, Massachusetts and several locations within Texas looking for the appropriate treatment for Ciara's cancer. Not only has this little girl given cancer a run for its money, she has done it with a smile on her face every single day. Ciara's tumor was located below her knee and in order to save Ciara's leg and avoid amputation (given the complexity of her particular case and tumor location) she underwent surgery in Houston, TX on October 16, 2018. During this operation in order to remove the remaining cancer cells from her leg she had to have a portion of her tibia resected and then reconstructed using a pediatric donor tibia. A very painful and complex procedure that could not be successfully completed by many surgeons in the nation. Our family was very fortunate to have been contacted by a world known pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in oncology in particular soft tissue and bone tumors to set up an appointment to discuss Ciara's case. Not only did he save her leg from amputation, radiation or her body from chemotherapy but he successfully removed the remaining cancer cells from her leg. She will still require very aggressive surveillance for the next several years. Synovial Sarcoma is a cancer that likes to come back even after several years. Ciara and her family are very hopeful about her future. Ciara has been asking to visit Ellen and would like to meet her someday in hopes of getting Ellen's help and support to raise awareness for synovial sarcoma for children. This type of cancer is generally diagnosed after a sports injury. Unfortunately Ciara's case is different. She was misdiagnosed for 3 years prior to be accurately diagnosed this past summer. It would mean the world to my little girl if Ellen would meet her and help Ciara find a way to raise funding to find a cure for synovial sarcoma.
