Ever since Prince William and Duchess Kate announced they were having another child, people have not been able to stop talking about it and speculating over whether they will be having a boy or a girl.
The couple already has one of each – Prince George was born in 2013 and Princess Charlotte joined the family in 2015. It was anybody’s guess as to what the gender of baby number 3 would be.
But it looks like Prince William may have just let it slip whether they will be welcoming a little prince or princess.
PEOPLE reports that, on Tuesday night, the prince was watching his soccer team, Aston Villa, play for the championship. After player Jack Grealish’s winning goal against rivals Cardiff City, William told fans, “I’m going to insist the baby is called Jack.” Then, after a pause, he added, “…or Jackie.”
The palace has neither confirmed nor denied that the baby will be a boy, but royal watchers have already excitedly jumped on the baby boy bandwagon.
Kate is due this month and preparations are already underway at the hospital where she is set to give birth. The palace will not reveal her due date, but it has been reported that she is due on April 23.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what the royal couple will name their third child, but bookmakers are placing bets on the baby’s name. Albert and Arthur are tied as the most popular boy’s names. Philip – after William’s grandfather – is also thought to be a contender.
If the baby does end up being a girl, bets favor Alice or Mary to be the chosen name.
One thing that is certain: whether the baby is a boy or girl, Charlotte will not lose her place in line to the throne. For centuries, a girl would be superseded by her younger sibling if that sibling happened to be a boy, but thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, birth order now determines lineage, regardless of gender.
Currently, Prince Charles is heir to the throne. Prince William is second in line, and Prince George and Princess Charlotte are third and fourth respectively. The new royal baby will take the fifth place in line, bumping down Prince Harry, who currently holds that spot.
