An Open Letter to Ellen DeGeneres from Gina Pospichal
Description
An Open Letter to Ellen DeGeneres:

Dear Ellen DeGeneres,
This year has been a tough one for the cattle producer. We have taken hit after hit. Your request for people to eat less meat was just one more punch in the gut to America’s cattle producers.

You have an opinion and you have a broad platform to share that opinion. In the past to support your opinion you used the following slanderous words: “They are all in pain, they are all treated badly. They are all diseased and they are all pumped with antibiotics.”

I, along with my fellow cattle producers, take great offense to these statements and to the eat less meat campaign you have sparked.

I can assure you that all cattle are not in pain. All cattle are not treated badly. All cattle are not diseased. All cattle are not pumped with antibiotics.

These statements are false generalizations.

As cattle producers, we pride ourselves on being stewards for the wonderful creatures that have been entrusted in our care.

In March I witnessed my husband risk his life to save a calf from raging rains during a flood. I have watched my father, tough as nails, shed tears when my favorite cow died of old age. My eight-year-old son has spent the night in a barn trying to nurse an injured calf back to health because he believed love could help her heal. And both he and my ten-year-old son want to grow up to be ranchers. But they already know that being a rancher is more than a profession. It is a way of life. A hard way of life.

Ellen DeGeneres, you always end your show asking people to be kind. You have always encouraged people to be understanding of others and be the change in the world. But you yourself have been less than kind to the cattle producers and you certainly haven’t made an effort to educate yourself about the rural way of life.

I urge you to meet with cattle producers. But, most of all, I encourage you to learn about the cattle industry before you use generalizations to use your influence to impact an industry that has already taken so many hits this year.

Warm Regards,
Gina Pospichal
