Description
Martin Luther King Jr. said that the most segregated hour in America is in church at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning.

It won’t be tomorrow in Oakland.

Two small churches, one with a black pastor named Bernard Emerson, the other with a white pastor named Kyle Brooks, are merging into a new church called Tapestry Church.

Their first sermon will be tomorrow morning.
They are calling it, “What if...”

Brooks told the Chronicle:

“It’s not just about people being in the same room on Sunday.
But it’s about people being able to embrace the reality about the church, which is, as Jesus put it, that we are one.”

Emerson say this isn’t about people from different walks of life coming together for one hour:

“I think it says something to that person that walks in the door and they see us, and they know it’s a possibility.”

“We’re people from different cultures, woven into the fabric of Oakland, to display the beauty of God’s story.”

“If we end up with a great photo but no actual commitment to each other’s causes, to each other’s actual lives, then we have failed.”

Somehow I don’t think they are going to fail.
