“Twenty eight years ago, I was a young teen during the Gulf War and there was a program in which the public could send letters to the soldiers out there.”
Marisol Herrera sent me this.
Years ago she wrote to a Marine during the Gulf War.
And now all these years later she finally got to meet him in person.
Here’s the rest of her post:
Last week, I had the greatest thrill to finally meet Bobby O'Daniel.
He’s a Marine I first wrote back and forth with since I was 15.
He would write about his life on a ship and what it was like at home and I would write about school and whatever crush I had that week.
There was something so special about handwritten letters that has disappeared from society.
Over the years, we have moved from letters to Facebook, and I get to be FB friends with his great wife Patty, too, and see their son grow up.
He flew in from NC for his class reunion in Merced so I drove from San Jose to meet him in real life!
When he opened the door I just ran up to him and we gave each other a huge hug and say how happy we were to finally meet after almost 30 years.
We went to his favorite burger place that he hadn’t been to in years.
And I drove him around town and we talked and he showed me where he went to school and places where he used to hang out.
I cannot tell you how excited and happy I was!!
