Finding out your child has autism is a scary thing for any parent. No parent wants to hear that their child is going to be “different.” They immediately start to fear for their child’s future. Will they have any friends? Will they be able to go to school? Get a job? Live on their own?
Not only that, but life at home will also be forever changed. Their child may not reach the same milestones as other kids their age and they may not develop relationships with their family members like other kids do.
Briana Blankenship has experienced all of this firsthand. Her 5-year-old daughter, Taylor, is nonverbal autistic and has never spoken a single word in her entire life.
Briana has worked hard with Taylor to help her in her learning and development. Taylor is sweet and loving, but Briana has always longed for the day when she might hear her daughter speak.
Then, one day recently, Briana was waiting in the drive-thru line at McDonald’s when she heard a noise from the backseat that caught her off-guard. She immediately grabbed her phone and started recording, then asked Taylor to repeat what she had just said.
When she heard what Taylor said next, Briana instantly broke down sobbing.
Not only had Taylor spoken her first word, but the first word she ever said was “MAMA!”
“I am ugly crying in the McDonald’s parking lot and the employees probably think I’m crazy,” Briana wrote in a now-viral Facebook post. “I’m pretty sure I held up the drive thru line but there was no way I wasn’t getting proof of this. I can’t explain how unbelievably grateful and ecstatic I am right now.”
What a beautiful and incredibly special moment! We’re so glad Briana was able to catch it on camera so we could all enjoy it with her!
Taylor may not be “like other kids” and she might move at a slower pace, but there’s no doubt of her love for her mother or her joy for life. We know she is going to go far!
