Thank You Sully for Being Such a Great Inspiration
4 years. 4 years since we first heard the words “your son has cancer.” 4 years since we were told there was a 50% chance of him surviving 5 years. 4 years and two relapses since we were told “if it comes back we don’t know how to kill it.”
Leonard Cohen wrote “there is a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” 4 years ago our world didn’t just crack, it broke wide open, and this beautiful light came pouring in. That light is the love we have received and it has illuminated the dark spaces of this journey. It held us up in our darkest days. It even managed to reach into my darkest spaces and lit a path to strength.
One of the things that makes Sully extraordinary is the amount of hearts and hands that are raising him. There are so many people who love him and have shaped him into the person he is today. Family by blood and by choice. Because of all the people we are blessed to know the first words that pop into my head when I reflect on these past four years are grateful and thankful. I’ve watched my child have to fight through things that are worse than I ever could have imagined. Yet I’m grateful for the people who loved him through it and thankful those treatments worked.
Jack and Macs lives have been turned upside down and inside out but I am thankful for the amazing community of people who have gone out of their way to make this better for them and I’m grateful this experience has made them compassionate, resilient kids.
I am, four years later, fundamentally changed. While I would love to take away the pain Sully has experienced, I don’t have that choice. But I can choose how I look at it. I choose to believe we’ve been given a gift. I choose to cherish the people, the love, the beauty these past four years have brought us. I choose to be grateful that I get a front row seat to love showing up. Every. Single. Day. To all of you that have carried us through, I am eternally grateful and thankful.
