"This is Archie. He is 11 1/2 years old.
Just like any child of his age he wants to move, run and most of all have fun; or as we say in this part of the world, ' to just have the Craic'
Unfortunately with each passing day his muscles are dying and because of this his ability to move is reduced.
Very soon he will be unable to walk at all.
I recently stood behind him as he attempted to climb up this slide. He realised immediately he wasn't able to do it anymore. I could feel the tears welling in my eyes as soon as I realised his new reality. Undeterred Archie looked at me and just said " It's ok Muma, I can crawl up."
The slide is old and made from metal. By the time he reached the top he was crying from pain. He refused to stop.
The look of delight on his face when he reached the summit was one of complete joy. He was even happier after he had slid down it!
If only things could be different for Archie; for his twin brothers and everyone else battling this vile disease. However, this is their reality.
We are so fortunate; so blessed. Unlike so many other people, we only have one problem and it is called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
