Several months ago my son Dakota Atkins and his girlfriend Brittnie Jo Jameson found out they were expecting a rare form of conjoined twins. They were conjoined at the chest (nipple to navel). They were devastated when their Dr told them to terminate the pregnancy, but Brittnie and Dakota were determined to give their firstborn babies a fighting chance so they reached out to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City Missouri, three hours drive from our home. The doctors at CMH told them the odds were not good unsure the extent of their shared organs but they were willing to see her through the pregnancy even though most conjoined twins don't live through the pregnancy or are stillborn.
However, Brittnie and Dakota would not give up!!
Two weeks before their due date Brittnie and Dakota made the move to Kansas City to prepare for the birth.
May 11th my PRECIOUS GRANDBABIES were born! Defying all odds, Guindelyn Rose and Guinevyre Raynes came into this world pink and precious. Our joy was short lived. Soon their oxygen began to drop and the girls were both intubated. But then things began turning around and they began feeding the twins and the girls started to gain weight. The last month has been full of joy and tears, hope and heartache, and many ups and downs.
Yesterday we celebrated the girls one month birthday. Another miracle!! But little Rose has a heart condition that is causing strain on both their tiny hearts. The twins are in desperate need of help and CMH has exhausted all their resources.
Not willing to give up our family is reaching out to other hospitals and to you, Ellen. Some of the hospitals have seen the twins records and give us hope.
Help us get our story out. We need a surgeon to seperate the twins. Ellen please help us give my granddaughters a chance!
