be aMAEzing - Mae's Journey
Description
Mae, has always been an active, healthy, cheerful, loving and silly child. She loves to play and sing with her big sister Mika, 5-years-old. In January 2014, just a month after her 2nd birthday, she began to get irritable and had a few other symptoms that could have been associated with the beginning stages of a tummy bug. After a few days, Mae began to act lethargic and began to show some signs of being in pain. With the first signs of this being something other than a bug, her parents, Andrea and Scott, had her seen by a doctor. On January 26, 2014, Mae was hospitalized with elevated liver enzymes.

After numerous tests and an invasive surgery, Mae has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Chemotherapy was started on February 5th, 2014. The next 18-months will be a long road for Mae and her family. It will be very expensive, and filled with multiple rounds of chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, scans, and surgeries. A donation-based fund (www.youcaring.com/maesjourney) has been established as a way for people to help Mae’s parents cover medical expenses and other household expenses so that the entire family can be together without additional worry.

While the family does have very good medical insurance, their out-of-pocket costs are exorbitant and they are seeking second opinions and working with other experts in the field of Neuroblastoma.
