Ellen, this family could use any help which you could give them.  Mom was a teacher but had to give up her job as it is necessary that she be at Collier's bedside.  Collier did get to come home at one time, after just a few days it became necessary that he return to Children's Hospital of Atlanta where he remains.  Mom has applied for grants in order to purchase a van which is necessary to transport Collier to the rehab which he must have when home .  He is progressing but very slowly.

One minute Collier was a healthy 11 year old 5th grade honor student, and the next he was in brain surgery fighting for his life. Four months later, he remains hospitalized. His family, especially his 10 year old sister, is cheering him on in this battle, but they could really use some help.

FLASHBACK (updated blog story): His last words to me were "Mama I'm Going To Die"
For those new to We Love Collier... here is "What Happened"
On Wednesday February 25, 2015Collier was enjoying his snow day with a neighbor friend playing Mind craft on his XBOX. Around 5pm he suddenly got a headache and was on the floor screaming in more pain than I've ever seen a child in. I assumed he was having a migraine since there is a family history. I gave him Advil, darkened his room, and put him in the bed to sleep it off. About an hour and a half later he woke up screaming again. This time he was vomiting. I couldn't get him to move away from it - he was choking on it so I picked him up. He was completely limp. As I tried to get him to talk he talked with one side of his mouth and slurred the answer, though he said it was Tuesday (but it was really Wednesday). His last words to me were "mama I'm going to die. Immediately after that he was unresponsive, with light breathing, and a steady heartbeat. " We called 911 and the police snow and ice vehicle was able to get us to the ambulance which brought us to Floyd.
At Floyd we were met by Dr. Hardwell who called in a neurosurgeon, Dr. Cowan, who removed a hematoma from his brain which was the size if a lemon. He said this is common seen in 80 year olds, but not seen in 11 year olds. He said when he sees this in 80 year olds they are given a 5% chance of survival, however since this isn't seen in children there is no data to give me. He said "This is very bad" and told me that I should prepare myself that my child may die. They stabilized him after his surgery and we had to wait until the road conditions allowed for safe travel. The next day CHOA Scottish Rite sent their transport team in a large truck to pics up and transport us to their hospital in Atlanta. We arrived around noon on Thursday February 26, 2015
We spent 3 weeks in the PICU where we were told by doctors "It is likely your child will be in a wheelchair, eyes open, not know who you are, not be able to speak, eat, walk, or do anything for himself because the damage is significant." After 2 weeks in PICU we watched Collier progress, have a trach put in, go for a feeding tube which was too risky so he stayed with the NG tube instead. I woke up to the sounds of a mother screaming as she watched her child pass away. At that point I decided it was time for Collier to come on and get us moved up to rehab - because as long as we are in PICU we are still in need of his life being saved. Collier slowly progressed as his prayer chain rapidly grew to 10,000 through facebook which proved to be one of the best supports a family can have. Schools and the community surrounded us with love and rallied to raise awareness and fundraise to help pay for Collier's medical expenses and care as mom will miss work and lose pay to be with Collier during this tragedy.
Finally, on March 19, 2015 we were moved to the rehab unit where we have seen extremely small steps in Collier, but feel BIG to us because of the PICU prognosis given. Collier has been gaining strength daily and shown us he is a fighter. He tries so hard to do what is asked of him. He is frustrated with understanding what we want, yet not understanding why his body isn't doing what he wants it to do. He hasn't yet started talking, using hands, or legs. He communicates with us by using his eyes. He shows emotion and cries (and now we hear sound when he cries). He swallows (which everyone says is HUGE). He came off the vent wonderfully and FAST. He is able to swallow a couple mL of liquid at a time. All the staff is amazed. Even the PICU staff hears and can't believe it so they come up to see for themselves and are amazed. Collier wants the trach out. He understands what he has to do to make that happen. He is doing it. Something he and I have always talked about is the fact that he can do anything he sets his mind to. I still tell him that and we still believe it. Collier has always done things the Collier Way, and he does them in his time. And he always does it amazingly! We have an expected stay of at least 3-4 more weeks at inpatient rehab and then we will move to day rehab. Lots of people ask about his skull and hopefully his skull will be put back on before we leave rehab!
It's May 9 and Collier's trach is out, his bone flap (skull piece) is back on, his NG tube is out, and he now has a G Tube for feeding. Collier developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream which caused a high fever, heartrate of 194, respiratory rate too high, was put on oxygen, and seen by the rapid response team a couple days ago. He is now stable, and trying to get back to the gym for therapy soon. We have a discharge date of May 19 and look forward to being home. Collier wasn't strong enough to attend day rehab so he has to go to outpatient rehab to strengthen up so he can return to day rehab (THey anticipate August).
We have lots of needs for Collier's medical care and expenses. If you would like to help us in this time it would be greatly appreciated.

I can't think of a more deserving cause than this! Both of Collier's parents are educators and his grandmother is a retired educator. This family has given of their time and talents to help children in our county flourish!  Due to this tragic event, Collier's mom has had to walk away from her job in order to help her son survive.  The bills are rising-the needs are many. Collier also has a sister who loves him very much and has had her world totally redefined due to their situation. Anything you could do to help them would be wonderful and would also bring awareness to his situation. Thank you!

Ellen, I start each morning and end each day looking for a new facebook update for sweet Collier. I don't personally know them but they have become a big part of my life each day. Collier is fighting so hard to recover from this terrible aneurysm, and is facing setbacks along the way. Jennifer, his Mom has been so strong through this whole ordeal and has to face all the medical expenses for his care on top of that. She has been forced to leave her teaching position to care for him full time. I truly don't see how she is  holding up. It saddens me to hear her talk about trying to apply for grants to assist with him and her stack of medical bills waiting to be paid. NOBODY should have to be under this kind of stress while coping with such a critical illness of their child. This is one nice family that I pray for with all my heart each day, and would love to see get some much needed help.

I have known his dad since our days in college, oh 20 plus years ago, and remained friends ever since.  I can not describe the anguish I know this family has endured, I can describe the faith, positive spirit and endurance they have shown.  From both parents, grandparents, step parents, aunts and uncles, they have been an encouragement to each other and the community.  We are in prayer for them daily and seeing that the story is now on ellenNation brought tears to my eyes!!

No one ever expects a child to be strickened with such a debilitating event. I have watched this family try to move mountains for thier son and I believe they would appreciate any type of help that you could give them. Thank you so much for all that you have done for so many other people Ellen and I would appreciate it if you would consider this little boy!!!

Ellen, I am writing on behalf of one of my students. His name is Collier Gray. As a teacher, you hope to make a difference in the lives of the students you teach. However, occasionally you will find a student that makes a difference in your life. Collier is one of those students. It breaks my heart to think about all this kid has had to endure since February 25th. When I see him, his eyes light up and he wants to talk to me so badly, but he can't. His family has him in the best place here in Georgia - Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. However, his care is not cheap. We have had several fundraisers within our community to help, but no way near enough to cover all of his medical expenses. Collier has made small steps in his recovery, but has a long way to go. With each day that passes, Collier's medical expenses skyrocket. Collier's mom, Jennifer, had to quit her job as a teacher in order to care for her son.  Jennifer has applied for grants to help pay for things like a van to carry Collier back and forth to rehab when he leaves the hospital. She is getting hit from all sides financially. Not only is she struggling financially, but she also has a daughter named Addison that she tries to spend time with. Ellen, I love this family! Is there anything you can do to help them? I appreciate your time regarding this matter. Thanks Ellen! You are the best!

Ellen, I come from that small town where colliers dad used to teach. My husband was in his class and my husband and mr.gray had the best understanding if your wanting to learn I'll go over and beyond to help you any way I can as a teacher. He helped my husband in so many ways he will never know. And from what my mother n law tells me he always thought my husband had it in him to go so far in life. Mr.gray helps at the community college teaching and this summer helping kids learn how to swim and not to hate water or be scared around a pool and pool safety. Mr gray and his family are outstanding in my book. As a community in Polk and floyd co. We have shared and tried to help this family out. Some could not donate but did their share to share the post. As teachers that teach children that have given their time to others now they need everyone's. If you don't want to give anything to help them please share their story on your show. So maybe at least they can get a van that they can own. Thank you.

This family needs help. Collier is a real fighter. He was progressing well enough to go home then there was a set back. He is back in the hospital and was quite ill and the doctors were stumped. He took a big step back but now is beginning to gain back what he has lost. The family has lost the mother's income from teaching so they are now living on just one salary. The family needs some help desperately to get a van. And I know the medical bills are going to be out of sight. Collier's sister's life has changed dramatically as well. She and Collier are so close. And her mom is away staying at the hospital. I know this must be scary for her. Please help if you can. Thanks

Such a tragic story that hits every mom in the heart!  His mother has barely left his side since Feb. 25th!  Besides trying to manage his care, she's had the daunting task of worrying about his transition home (which was brief unfortunately) and the mounting stack of unpaid medical bills; her husband has been an unwavering support since she's had to resign her teaching job.  Her sweet daughter has had to adjust to life without her brother as her best friend but also her mom who has been the support system for Collier.  This family truly needs miracles - both for Collier and for them to provide the best care for his recovery!

Ellen, sure do hope you can help Collier Gray...he is an exceptional kid who has an amazing mom, who is doing all in her power to help her child.  No family should have to deal with the first of all the medical issues this boy has encountered, but his mom should not have to worry about how to care for him once he goes home.  No family is equipped with the necessary equipment needed to transport him to his appts or what he needs.  You have helped so many before him and hopefully you will be able to help provide for Collier ' s needs.  Thank you!

He was always so full of kindness, witty banter, and energy.  He is extremely intelligent, and ALWAYS cared more about others' feelings and well being than his own.  This family and community has pulled together exhausting every resource, but really need a miracle! When they say it takes a village to raise a kid...this village has pulled together to try to save Collier!

Ellen, please, if you are reading this, Thank You.  Thank you for taking the time, and if there is anything you can do to help, it would be a blessing for this family, and community!

Collier cannot talk, eat, or swallow.  He cannot use his hands or his arms:  he cannot write, draw or play any games.  He cannot turn over, sit up, stand up, walk.  He cannot hold  his head up on his own... Collier's ability to communicate is currently limited to answering a yes/no question (2 blinks for yes; close the eyes for no) and crying... but we know our Collier is still very much 'there'!  Before this last re-admit to the hospital, a month ago, we could tell jokes and he would smile...The funnier the joke, the bigger the smile.  He had even gotten to a point where we could hear him chuckle in his throat.  The last few weeks have been scary, full of uncertainty - some questions answered but many still unanswered... Despite everything, this last week, we started seeing glimpses of Collier's sense of humor again - and it absolutely warms our hearts.

Dear Ellen Collier Gray is my 11 year old Nephew. He and his family desperately need a miracle. On Feb 25th, 2015 this vibrant, loving, smart, handsome and oh so funny boy was stricken with a spontaneous aneurysm which also resulted in a stroke. He has been hospitalized at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Atlanta for 4 months. (with the exception of 4 days home before he declined and had to be readmitted ) Collier's mom, Jennifer is not only my sister in law she is my dear friend. She is a devoted mom to Collier and his sister Addison. Due to Collier requiring constant around the clock care, Jennifer had to resign from the teaching job that she very much loved. This cut her family's income by half. They are in need of so many things to assist in Collier's rehabilitation upon discharge from the hospital. Please take a moment to read his story on his Facebook page  We Love Collier Gray.  Any assistance to help them in this journey of their new normal would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. Collier's  Aunt Kat

Thank you so much for being part of Collier's life over the past 7 1/2 months. Our sweet angel has earned his wings at 12:56 pm today. I want to ask you to please all join us in prayer and that we continue to stay united for Collier as he finds his journey in heaven!
